In
cooperation with the Berlin
biotechnology company, Medical
Enzymes AG, a new enzymatic
tumor treatment is investigated
in clinical trials at ZAFES.
With this treatment, a naturally
occuring enzyme catalyzes the
cleavage of a cell growth promoting
amino acid. Thus, this amino
acid is no longer available
for growth processes. The method
takes advantage of the fact
that cancer cells are more dependent
on certain amino acids than
regular cells. The adminstration
of the enzyme that cleaves the
amino acid results in “starving”
the cancer cells.
Initially ZAFES started a clinical
trial for the colon cancer indication.
Now, the clinical studies are
extended to indications such
as lung and kidney cancer. In
the cooperation with ZAFES the
industrial partner Medical Enzymes
AG benefits from the numerous
medical centers that are members
of ZAFES. These centers have
access to high numbers of patients
and assure the fast accomplishment
of clinical trials. ZAFES coordinates
the project and is the compent
contact for Medical Enzymes
AG.
