German neuropathic pain research association, pathophysiology, prevention and therapy

>

The German neuropathic pain research association (DFNS) is building a network between important institutions, scientific authorities and medicinal disciplines. The combined scientific backgrounds as well as the combined clinical know how will lead to a better understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms and improvement in the treatment of neuropathic pain. The main goals are to hinder the development of chronic neuropathic pain with early diagnostic and adequate therapeutic treatment and to cure established chronic neuropathic pain using combinations of different therapies. Lesions or dysfunction’s of the central and peripheral nervous systems are the cause of neurophatic pain.

The development of a patient databank with different neurophatic pain disorders is a major task of the DFNS. This databank should include exact quantitative sensible changes as well as physiological backgrounds. The DFNS will additionally investigate mechanisms involved in the manifestation and maintenance of the different neurophatic pain disorders and will analyze efficiencies of novel and well established therapies.

The “pharmazentrum frankfurt” (Prof. Dr. G. Geißlinger) is one of 18 German centers involved in the DFNS, carrying out the project ”Idiopathische Trigeminusneuralgie and trigeminaler pain: Pathophysiologie, mechanistically orientated Investigation and treatment“.
