The main research areas of the First Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, include both, clinical topics as well as basic science.
Molecular mechanisms of cellular signal transduction involved in colorectal cancer, are studied within the framework of several projects. As a result, we have focused our interests upon the exploration of anti-carcinogenic effects of secondary plant extracts and the secondary prevention of colorectal carcinoma through nutrients and therapeutics. Clinical research focuses on the development of innovative drug therapies in inflammatory bowel disease as well as in chronic hepatitis C. Hereby, the First Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, participates in many multi-center intervention studies, some of which under the leadership of our institute.
