The Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology is made up of Prof. Dr. Rolf Marschalek and Prof. Theo Dingermann, who focus their scientific research upon genomic instability in human diseases, especially in human cancer. Their particular focus is on High-risk Acute leukemia, the biology of leukemias as well as the establishment of animal model system. Dr. Ilse Zündorf is involved in the production and characterization of monoclonal antibodies directed against oncoproteins and other immunogenic substances.
Prof. Dr. Rolf Marschalek’s group is working on high risk acute leukaemia, which is based on chromosomal translocations of the human MLL gene. (Research topics are: the pathomolecular mechanisms of leukemia development, genetic instability, the mechanisms of chromatin and gene regulation and pathobiology. He is heading a European diagnostic and reference center for the analysis and characterization of chromosomal breakpoints in MLL-mediated acute leukemias, which provides MRD markers for the follow-up of acute leukemia patients in Europe. The scientific work is carried out in national and international networks.
