The Institute of Clinical Pharmacology focuses primarily upon the identification of mechanisms involved in pain and inflammation. Specific target molecules of the class of lipids like sphingolipids and cyclooxygenases (COX), nitric oxide (NO) synthases or transcription factors (e.g. NF-kappaB), as well as their pharmacological manipulation, are of special interest. The goal is to establish a basic understanding, which could lead to the development of novel and selective drugs.
The investigation of the anti-tumor properties of analgesics contributes to the characterization of their impact on cancer therapy and prophylaxis. This also contributes to the identification of signal transduction pathways of tumor manifestation.
Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic investigations of drug effects and safety are carried out in clinical trials. Pharmacogenetic studies are performed to explain the variability of drug effects. The drug transport in animals, volunteers and patients can be determined with the use of microdialysis techniques in combination with highly sensitive detection methods (HPLC, GC, LC/MS/MS) as well as recent imaging techniques (fMRI) and mathematical models.
