Scientific investigations focus on the circadian system that generates an endogenous (circadian) rhythm and entrains this rhythm to the day/night cycle. By means of a vertical approach (combining analyses at the molecular, cellular and systemic levels) mechanisms of rhythm generation and synchronization are analyzed in the master circadian clock, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and in peripheral oscillators (hypophysial pars tuberalis, pineal organ, adrenal gland, liver). In consideration of evolutionary aspects the investigations are performed not only with mammals (rats, mice, hamster) but also with the lancelet (Amphioxus).
A second line of research is devoted to neuroprotection and neurodegeneration. Investigations are performed with organotypic brain slice cultures and whole animals (rats, mice) and focus on mechanisms of secondary neuronal damage. Particular attention is paid to the role of glial cells (microglia, astrocytes) and the development of new strategies in therapy of brain lesions.
