The Institute for General Practice pursues a research program aimed at systematically promoting quality on the one hand, and on the structured provision of medical care in general practice, in particular for the chronically ill, on the other. Accordingly, research projects are divided into two areas – “Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (Academic Head: Martin Beyer, MSc) and “Chronic Care and Health Services Research“ (Academic Head: Prof. Dr. Jochen Gensichen, MPH). Research topics range from the identification and prevention of medication errors and new concepts for the care of patients with depression or chronic heart failure to the increasing clinical and practical challenges of co- and multimorbidity.
Research projects are carried out under the conditions of everyday life in general practices. Currently, 300 academic teaching and research practices throughout the Rhine-Main area cooperate with the Institute (as of 05/2008). An increase in practice recruitment to include further regional clusters throughout the whole of Germany is in preparation.
