The
Paul-Ehrlich-Institute (PEI,
Federal Department for Sera
and Vaccines) is an independent,
federal authority in the business
branch for the Federal Department
of Health and Social Security
(BMGS).The scope of duties include
the approval and sample testing
of (immune) biological human
and animal drugs (vaccines for
human and animals, allergens,
immune globulins, sera, monoclonal
antibodies, blood products,
gene therapeutics, somatic and
xenogene cell therapeutics)
The PEI has over 600 employees
who carry out basic as well
as applied research in the areas
of bacteriology, virology, immunology,
study of allergens, medicinal
biotechnology and hematology/
transfusion medicine. The research
is accompanied by comprehensive
examinations.
